On the Register

All summer we've been drifting around, waiting for Kevin's security clearance. This has been fun to explain to everyone (So, we're waiting for a security clearance. No, he doesn't have the job yet. No, he's not working for the lab. No, nothing's set in stone...). But then a couple weeks ago, on his fortnightly phone call to the State Department, Kevin found out all his security clearance paperwork was all in and awaiting final review. This was good. First of all, it meant the long process of contacting and interviewing all of Kevin's associates from the last 10 years or so, across the country and several continents had been finished. It also means they figured he wasn't a shady, untrustworthy, Communist spy. That's nice.
And today, we got a letter in the mail telling Kevin that he is now officially on The Register. This means that next time the State Department hires for a training class, Kevin will be on the list of available hires. Kevin passed with a pretty good score (5.4), but it put him in the middle of the pack of amazing applicants that the Foreign Service gets. Fortunately, Kevin held the ace-of-speaking-Chinese up his sleeve, and it bumped his score up 4 points (5.8). We think that this means he'll pretty much be picked for the next training class (in the end of October).
We'll keep you posted, though.

All right! It must have been a relief to find out your husband is not a communist spy!

Well, I hope he gets to start up this Fall. The State Dept is full of so many hoops to jump through, it's ridiculous! (Although it makes sense why they guard those positions so carefully.)
